“I Am Still The Most Successful And Decorated Football Player In Nigeria” – Mikel Obi

Former Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi has reaffirmed his status as the most successful and decorated football player in Nigeria’s history.

In a recent podcast interview, the 34-year-old midfielder, who currently plays for Kuwait SC, reflected on his illustrious career that spanned over 15 years and saw him win multiple trophies at club and national level.

Mikel Obi said he was proud of his achievements and legacy, especially as he had to overcome many challenges and obstacles along the way.

He cited his controversial transfer saga in 2005, when he was caught in a tug-of-war between Manchester United and Chelsea, as one of the most difficult moments of his career. He eventually joined Chelsea, where he spent 11 years and won two Premier League titles, four FA Cups, two League Cups, one Champions League and one Europa League.

Mikel Obi also highlighted his role in Nigeria’s national team, where he made 91 appearances and scored six goals. He captained the Super Eagles to a third-place finish at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, having previously won the tournament in 2013. He also represented Nigeria at two World Cups, in 2014 and 2018, and won a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympics.
